FAQ license questions GPL

Several packages that we already work with/around, such as mcstas and the nexus API are licensed under the Gnu Public License version 2. While the attempt at open source is commendable, what obligations does the GPL impose on us? For instance, does Jiao's mcstas work need to be GPL as well?
